Using a turbo trainer is never going to beat the feeling of being out on the open road, but with the dark cold wet nights of winter or if you have time constraints they can be a necessity and an invaluable tool for at the very least maintaining but more importantly improving your fitness. With a structured workout within 1 hour you can get some great work done and improve your fitness whilst in the comfort of your own home.
Upon opening the box on the Tacx Booster turbo it is obvious straight away the quality is very high and the assembly required is very minimal, initial set-up can be easily achieved within 15 minutes from the box and the units legs fold away between workouts to cut down on the storage space required. The Skyliner front wheel support and quick release skewer are included which make this into a complete turbo trainer package from the box.
The turbo itself has a large 2kg flywheel which gives the turbo trainer a great realistic smooth road feel because of the inertia the flywheel builds up. Unlike some of the turbo’s with a small flywheel that give you the feeling that you are constantly pushing a heavy weight rather than the feeling you are used too from riding on the road which the Booster simulates well.
The magnetic brake system has 10 resistance settings which can be adjusted as you ride using the handlebar resistance lever, which works great for interval training as you can easily click it up a couple of notches for your interval and then when the interval is done click it back down to recover with minimal resistance.
Resistance is consistent throughout the workout because there is no fluid to heat up so from workout to workout you will be getting exactly the same resistance in the selected resistance setting. Another great feature with the magnetic brake is the ability to generate high watts at a low cadence which is perfect for simulating hills and with the 1050 watts max resistance you have a huge range of cadence/power settings when combined with your bikes gears.
Noise is always a big point when it comes to choosing the right turbo trainer, the noise levels from the Booster are no worse than other products on the market and obviously the noise rises from a conversation level at low power up to a louder but tolerable noise at higher outputs.
Fear not from the the tagline “choice of the pro’s” because this turbo’s range of use is massive. Perfect for the easiest of recovery rides to the most brutal intervals sessions, Because of the magnetic brake system you can easily spin at 100rpm under 100 watts all the way up to the massive 1050 watts.
